The name that can be named
is not the eternal Name.
The unnamable is the eternally real.
Naming is the origin
of all particular things.
Free from desire,
you realize the mystery.
Caught in desire,
you see only the manifestations.
Yet mystery and manifestations
arise from the same source.
This source is called darkness.
Darkness within darkness.
The gateway to all understanding.
"Tao Te Ching" - "Dàodéjing"
(around 2200-2500 b.c.)
the Pattern which Connects
"What pattern connects
the crab to the lobster
and the orchid to the primrose
and all the four of them to me?
And me to you?
And all the six of us to the amoeba in one direction
and to the back-ward schizophrenic in another?"
(Gregory Bateson, Mind and Nature: A Necessary Unity, 1979)
An Ecology of Mind
"The major problems in the world are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think."
Gregory Bateson
